SIRIM was established as a statutory body under the Ministry of Science, Technology and the Environment by the SIRIM (Incorporation) Act, 1975 which came into effect on 15 September 1975.  On 1 September 1996, SIRIM was corporatised to be known as SIRIM Berhad. SIRIM Berhad incorporated under the Companies Act was vested with all the rights, privileges and obligations of SIRIM.  

Under the umbrella of SIRIM Berhad, the NML-SIRIM plays a very important role in the dissemination of measurement traceability in Malaysia. Similar to other NMIs around the world, responsibility of NML-SIRIM is huge in ensuring that metrological infrastructure in the country meet the current international standard. Over the past 20 years, the laboratory has equipped itself with all the necessary infrastructure to cater for the needs of the country.

The NML-SIRIM is   member of the Asia Pacific Metrology Programme (APMP) and ASIA Pacific Legal Metrology Forum (APLMF) and actively participates in the above bodies. The NML-SIRIM has participated in various international program such as Key comparisons, supplementary comparison and proficiency testing program. The NML-SIRIM is also collaborating with the Standard Malaysia in organizing various PT program in the country to ensure laboratories under Malaysia accreditation scheme provide calibration services that conform to the ISO 17025 requirement.
